Yes, Makini supports both cloud-based and on-premises systems. For on-premises installations, connections require double the connection credits compared to cloud systems. The connection process typically requires opening specific ports and whitelisting Makini's IP addresses in your firewall configuration. For some on-premises systems, VPN tunnels may be necessary. We provide detailed technical requirements during implementation planning. In cases where security policies prohibit external connections, we offer self-hosted deployment options where Makini runs entirely within your infrastructure, eliminating the need for external network access to on-premises systems.
Authentication errors (401 status code) typically occur for a few reasons: the API token is invalid or expired, the underlying system credentials have changed, the system requires reauthorization, or the token lacks necessary permissions. First, verify you're including the token correctly in the Authorization header. Check the connection status in the Makini dashboard—if it shows as requiring reauthorization, the customer needs to reconnect. If credentials were recently changed in the source system, you'll need to reconnect to obtain a new token. For persistent issues, check if the system account has sufficient permissions to perform the requested operation. If the problem continues, contact support with the request ID for investigation.
Disconnecting a connection can be done through the Makini dashboard or API. In the dashboard, navigate to the connection and select disconnect. Via API, call the disconnect endpoint with the connection ID. Disconnecting immediately invalidates the API token and stops all scheduled syncs and workflows for that connection. The connection credits used are returned to your pool and become available for new connections. Disconnecting does not delete historical data that was previously synced—that remains accessible until you choose to delete it. Customers can reconnect the same system at any time, which will create a new connection with a new API token. Use disconnection for customers who churn or when permanently retiring a connection.
