Inmedius is technical publications software for aerospace and defense, developed in Pittsburgh and owned by Boeing since 2012. Its S1000D Publishing Suite manages maintenance and operating manuals as XML data modules under S1000D. S1000Dmanager handles projects and content management, browser and desktop editors handle authoring, S1000Dpublisher produces PDF output, S1000Dprism provides interactive viewing and S1000Dreview runs approval workflows. ATAmanager adds support for ATA commercial aviation standards. The suite was later released as Inmedius Spectrum and is now Boeing Spectrum, an on-premises suite for S1000D issues 1.6 through 5.0. Customers have included GE Aviation, IMP Aerospace and Otokar.
Where a connection exposes publication data, the Inmedius MCP saves documentation teams manual repository searches. A technical author asks which data modules for one aircraft system are still in review and who holds them. A publications manager checks which data modules in a publication module changed since the last issue. A maintenance planner pulls the procedure data module for one task to attach to a work order in a separate maintenance system.
You sign in through Makini Link, then paste the MCP endpoint Makini issues into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client, and get_connection_details shows which objects and fields that connection offers. S1000Dmanager applies document-level access controls and export control settings, so the agent sees only what the connecting user may see, and export-controlled content should stay with cleared users. For an installation on the customer's network, IT can allow Makini's fixed IP addresses through the firewall or set up a VPN.

Yes, Boeing Spectrum is the current name of the Inmedius S1000D software line. Continental DataGraphics, a Boeing subsidiary, acquired Inmedius of Pittsburgh in April 2012, the suite was later released as Inmedius Spectrum, and Boeing now offers it as Boeing Spectrum. Module names such as S1000Dmanager, S1000Dreview, S1000Dpublisher and S1000Dprism carried over, which is why many teams still call it Inmedius.
Boeing Spectrum, the current form of the Inmedius suite, supports S1000D issues 1.6 through 5.0, including Business Rules Exchange (BREX) validation. Data modules written to different issues follow different schemas, so projects on different issues may need separate handling in reports and migrations. Older Inmedius installations may support fewer issues, so check the installed version with your administrator.
Inmedius, sold today as Boeing Spectrum, runs on premises and is hosted by the customer, under a perpetual per-user license with annual maintenance. Content sits in a Common Source Database (CSDB) on your own servers. For an MCP connection, this means IT can allow Makini's fixed IP addresses through the firewall, or set up a VPN if allowlisting is not possible.
Yes, Makini offers an Inmedius MCP server: you sign in through Makini Link with the credentials you already use, receive a unique MCP endpoint and add it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client. Each connection runs on its own token, scoped to what those credentials can do. Because Inmedius holds S1000D content, call get_connection_details first to see which objects it exposes.
An agent connected to Inmedius can turn status questions into lists, where the connection exposes data modules and publication modules. A publications manager can ask which data modules referenced by a publication module are not yet released, or how many modules sit at each status in one project before a delivery date. Each S1000D data module has a data module code and issue number, so answers can be checked in S1000Dmanager.
An AI agent should not edit or approve Inmedius data modules by default; start read-only and leave writes to authors. A data module change affects BREX validation, review status and every publication module that references it, and the generic tools on Makini's page, such as create_work_order, do not describe S1000D authoring. Keep editing in S1000DauthorPro and approvals in S1000Dreview.
An Inmedius administrator should create a dedicated S1000Dmanager user for the connection and give it access only to the projects the use case needs. S1000Dmanager supports document-level access controls and export control settings for ITAR and EAR, so keep export-controlled projects out of the agent's scope unless every person using the agent is cleared. Test on a non-production project first if one exists.
In Inmedius, S1000Dmanager handles projects, workflow and the CSDB, S1000Dreview runs quality assurance and approval workflows, and S1000Dprism is the IETP viewer for desktop and iPad. Authors write in S1000DauthorPro XE in the browser or in S1000DauthorPro Desktop, an Arbortext plug-in, and S1000Dpublisher produces PDF output. The current Boeing Spectrum suite also adds Boeing Advisor for validation.
