Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service is Microsoft's application for organizations that deliver onsite service at customer locations, built on Microsoft Dataverse. Service agents create work orders, often from incident types, dispatchers assign bookable resources on the schedule board, and technicians work their bookings in the mobile app. Customer assets sit at functional locations with their service history, agreements generate recurring preventive maintenance work orders, and inventory, purchase orders and returns keep truck stock supplied.
Where a connection exposes the relevant tables, the Dynamics 365 Field Service MCP lets an agent answer questions that would otherwise take several views and filters. A dispatcher asks which high priority work orders in one territory are still Unscheduled. A service manager pulls the work order history of a customer asset and its child assets before a contract renewal. An inventory manager checks open purchase orders for parts a technician needs this week. The agent can also prepare a work order with the right incident type for a dispatcher to review.
You sign in to your Dynamics 365 environment through Makini Link, then paste the MCP endpoint Makini issues into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another MCP client, and get_connection_details shows which objects and fields that connection offers. Dataverse checks every request against the connecting user's security roles, such as Field Service - Dispatcher, and column-level security can hide fields. Booking status changes update the work order system status, so keep scheduling with a dispatcher.

Yes, Dynamics 365 Field Service data can be reached through two MCP servers. Microsoft offers a Dataverse MCP server, which an admin enables per environment in the Power Platform admin center and which works with clients such as Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Makini also provides one: you sign in through Makini Link, receive a scoped MCP endpoint and get tools such as search_work_orders.
Dynamics 365 Field Service work orders use six system statuses: Unscheduled, Scheduled, In Progress, Completed, Posted and Canceled. Booking status changes drive most of them: a Traveling or In Progress booking sets the work order to In Progress, a Completed booking to Completed, and a Canceled booking returns it to Unscheduled. With several bookings, the most advanced booking status usually decides.
In Dynamics 365 Field Service, setting a work order to Posted generates invoices for the work order products and services used for the billing account, creates actuals for time and costs, and fills the Closed By and Closed On fields. Field Service Settings affect how invoices and actuals are created. Since these are financial records, let an agent find Completed work orders and leave posting to a service manager.
Yes, where your connection and security roles allow it, since Makini's Dynamics 365 Field Service tool list includes create_work_order. A new work order needs a work order type, a price list, the system status Unscheduled, the taxable setting if taxes are enabled, and a service account unless the work order type allows none. A dispatcher then books it on the schedule board.
In Dynamics 365 Field Service, give the agent a dedicated user with the Field Service - Dispatcher role for scheduling questions, or Field Service - Inventory Purchase for stock and purchasing. Field Service - Resource sees only work orders assigned to that user, which is too narrow, and Field Service - Administrator covers all tables and settings, which is broader than needed. Test in a sandbox environment first.
No, Dynamics 365 Field Service runs in the cloud on Microsoft Dataverse inside a Power Platform environment. Applications reach its tables through the Dataverse Web API, which follows OData v4. For a Makini connection this means there is no customer-hosted server to open in a firewall; you sign in to your environment through Makini Link and choose which environment the endpoint should reach.
Yes, the Dynamics 365 Field Service mobile app can work offline: it downloads the data defined in an offline profile and syncs changes automatically once the device reconnects. Microsoft notes that the new mobile experience does not support offline work. For an agent, a booking completed without signal may still show as In Progress on the server until the device syncs.
Custom columns and business units in Dynamics 365 Field Service both limit what an agent sees. Whether custom columns and tables are available depends on the connection, and get_connection_details shows which columns it exposes. Dataverse column-level security can hide sensitive fields, and roles such as Field Service - Inventory Purchase are scoped to a business unit, so cross-region reporting needs access to each one.
